REVIEW: WYC’s Got Talent
About this event: 4th World Youth Congress - Quebec City 2008

As well as being socially conscious individuals, WYC participants have proven to be talented in the arts as well. Hundreds of delegates showed up at the Global Village tent during the evening of August 16 to cheer on dozens of their fellow participants who performed in the Congress Talent Show.

Highlights of the evening included Princess Atak who brought her New Zealand-brand of soul to Québec City. With a flower in her long hair, Atak belted out a passionate song that featured a mixture of Māori (indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand), soul and hip-hop music.

Urban performances continued to dominate the night with Algerian rapper Solo who got delegates out on the dance floor during his powerful, raw performance about the oppression committed against Algerian people by their government. On a lighter note, a Romanian singer decked out in a ruby red dress received a standing ovation following her beautiful interpretation of an Italian operatic song.

While many acts went solo, a British and Brazilian duo combined their talents to give an eclectic performance together. While the former sang, the latter played the guitar, as well as performing “body percussion”—making drum-like noises with her body parts.

More familiar to my North American ears were pieces by two entertainers from the United States and Morocco who sang impressive renditions of ballads by Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan and American R&B singer Alicia keys, respectively.

In addition to songstylings, delegates demonstrated their prowess in other artistic areas including Benjamin from France who, in a refreshing departure from many of the other acts during the Talent Show, played the classical piano.

Most touching of all was a video that debunked stereotypes of Pakistanis as antagonist peoples. Dozens of individuals were featured in the video singing against such negative portrayals and perceptions of their country and its citizens. Following the video’s conclusion, not a dry eye was left amongst most audience members.

Light-hearted or solemn, dancing or singing, Congress delegates have proven that there is more than one outlet through which a person can inspire and be inspired.
